They learn about real-life uses for addition, and they are introduced to math tiles.Unit 3 - SubtractionIn this unit students are introduced to subtraction. They learn subtraction stories, sums of 2, subtraction sentences, and sums of 3. They learn to use a number line to count back, practice sums of 3 and counting back, and learn a new math drill strategy. They further practice sums of 2 and learn about subtracting zero. They learn about sums of 4, subtracting all, ways to take apart numbers, and subtracting by making a ten. They practice sums of 2 and of 3, and learn about vertical subtraction sentences.Unit 4 - Addition and SubtractionIn this unit, students learn how to think about addition in order to subtract. They learn how to know when to add or to subtract, and how addition and subtraction are related. They learn related addition facts and related subtraction facts, and they learn to write addition sentences and subtraction sentences. In addition, they practice sums of 3, 4, 5, and 6.Unit 5 - ComparingIn this unit students investigate comparing. They learn to compare amounts, and learn about greater than and less than, including their symbols. They learn to compare numbers using symbols, and practice sums of 4, 5, 6, and 7.Unit 6 - Sorting, Classifying, and Using GraphsIn this unit students learn about sorting and classifying. They learn to make graphs. They learn about picture graphs, tally graphs, and bar graphs, and experience a real-world example of using a graph. In addition, they practice sums of 6, 7, 8, and 9.After this unit students are presented with the Mid-term Exam.Unit 7 - Length and CapacityIn this unit students are introduced to length and learn to measure something in non-standard units. They learn what inches and centimeters are and what length is. Next they are introduced to estimation and learn to estimate capacity and length. They learn the advantages of estimation versus perfect measurement, and practice sums of 4, 8, 9, and 10.Unit 8 - GeometryIn this unit, students are introduced to shapes. They learn to identify plane figures, they explore solid figures, they make new shapes, and they learn about equal and unequal parts. They learn about halves and fourths, and explore fractions. They practice sums of 5, 9, and 10.Unit 9 - Patterns and TimeIn this unit, students learn to identify patterns, including pictorial patterns and number patterns. They also learn to extend and create patterns. Next, students learn about telling time. They learn what an analog clock is, and what a digital clock is. They study what a half hour is, and practice reading time. They also practice sums of 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9.Unit 10 - Spatial Sense and MapsIn this unit students are introduced to spatial sense. They learn position words, as well as how to follow directions on a map and how to find distance on a map.Unit 11 - More AdditionIn this unit students learn to add by making a ten. They review thinking about addition to subtract, and near doubles and doubles. They learn to add three numbers, they practice story problems, and they learn to count over 100. They also practice sums of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10.Unit 12 - Place Value and Mental MathIn this unit students discuss place value in the numbers 10 through 20. They learn about groups of ten, and learn to skip count by tens. They learn about tens and ones in place value, and learn to add tens using mental math. They also learn about adding tens and ones, adding two-digit numbers, and subtracting tens with mental math. In addition, they practice sums of 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.
