Course OverviewGrade 5 Language Arts/Reading is a rigorous course that builds and challenges students' growing language arts and reading skills with more complex texts and writing structures.  Students learn how to create, support, and develop a logical flow of ideas in writing that will convey to readers a main point or message. In addition, concepts of English basics, including phonics, word origins, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar are reviewed. Course topics include:

Scope and Sequence

Unit 1In this unit students study treasure seekers, the structure of prose, sentence grammar, the writing process, and using characters in prose. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 2In this unit students explore sentence fragments, review full sentences, discuss how to write a personal narrative, events in prose, vocabulary, and combining sentences. They investigate settings in prose, writing to develop a theme, and themes in prose. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 3In this unit students discuss run-on sentences, writing with text evidence, summarizing prose, as well as vocabulary and spelling. They review nouns, explore common and proper nouns, ideas for fantasy writing, as well as making inferences in prose. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 4In this unit students learn singular and plural nouns. They investigate how to write a fantasy story, how to write a narrative, and idioms, adages, and proverbs. They study possessive nouns, editing a fantasy story, plurals and possessives, quoting and explaining text, and presenting a fantasy story. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 5In this unit students explore the structure of drama, as well as synonyms and antonyms, writing the introduction for a narrative, action verbs, dialogue in narrative, and theme in drama. They learn to compare and contrast writing styles. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 6In this unit student review action verbs, investigate homographs, pacing in narrative writing, verb tenses, conclusions in narrative writing, and characters in drama. In addition, discussing main and helping verbs. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 7In this unit students learn the settings in drama, irregular verbs, linking verbs, perfect verbs, and events in drama. They review past tense verbs and future tense verbs, and study progressive verbs and correcting verb tense shifts. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 8In this unit students learn about the structure of poetry, pronouns and antecedents, theme in poetry, subject and object pronouns, as well as reflexive pronouns. They have a pronouns review, then study pronoun-verb agreement, metaphors and similes. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 9In this unit students recognize possessive pronouns, and relative pronouns. They also explore pronouns, contractions, and homophones. They obtain skills in writing with descriptive details, adventure stories, adjectives that compare, and writing to compare and contrast. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 10In this unit students discuss contractions, study mystery stories, writing an expository essay, comparing with more and most, as well as analyzing multimedia content. They explore analyzing multimedia content, writing evidence to support ideas, and adjectives review. Following this unit students are presented with the Mid-Term Review and Exam.Unit 11In this unit students will learn how to analyze a graphic novel, comparing with good and bad, writing introductions and conclusions, as well as review adjectives. Students will study the structure of historic text, ideas for essay writing, adverbs, and main idea and details. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 12In this unit students explore writing an essay, adverbs that compare, summarizing informational text, and editing an essay. They discuss linking ideas in opinion writing, using good and well, comparing historic texts, negatives, and presenting an essay. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 13In this unit students compare historic texts, negatives, presenting an essay, explore comparison in scientific text, writing that persuades, prepositions, and prepositional phrases. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 14In this unit students study conjunctions, gain understanding of content words, ideas for book reviews, subordinating conjunctions, and review synonyms and antonyms. They study sequence, correlative conjunctions, and titles of works. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 15In this unit students identify cause and effect, how to edit a book review, interjections, and presenting a book review. They will learn about the structure of technical text, capitalization, present tense verbs, understanding technical text, and common capitalization mistakes. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 16In this unit students explore using resources to understand words, commas with introductory elements, writing with purpose to an audience, comparing text structures, how to write a letter, and finding evidence in text. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 17In this unit students investigate summarizing a speech, writing supporting details, punctuation in a series, and writing a main idea. They explore comma usage and writing a research report. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 18In this unit students will learn definitions and examples, writing with organization, and abstract nouns. They discuss monitoring comprehension, writing transition words and phrases, as well as choosing a topic to research. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 19In this unit students discuss restatements, writing effective sentences, and using multiple sources. They learn about finding information from multiple sources and make comparisons. Followed with a unit review and unit exam.Unit 20In this unit students obtain skills with writing a research paper, writing a conclusion, editing a research paper, and publishing a research paper. Following this unit students are presented with the Final Review and Final Exam.
