Course Overview

The Investigating Careers course covers a wide range of career fields, providing students with valuable insights and knowledge. In the first four units, students explore careers in Agriculture and Natural Resources, Architecture and Construction, Arts and Communication, and Business and Administration. They learn about managerial roles, fundamental practices, and industry-specific skills. These units provide a strong foundation for understanding various career paths. In the subsequent units, students delve into specific career sectors such as Education and Training, Finance and Insurance, Government and Public Administration, Health Science, Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation, and Human Services. They gain insights into the responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities in these fields, preparing them for potential careers in these sectors.

 

The course also covers Information Technology, Law and Public Safety, Manufacturing, Retail and Wholesale Sales and Service, Scientific Research, Engineering, and Mathematics, and Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics, providing students with a well-rounded understanding of a wide array of professions in these areas. In the final units, students learn about High School and Future Career Paths, Finances, Preparation for College and Life, Career Readiness, Career Awareness, Career Path Decisions, and various career fields. They develop essential skills for career planning, financial management, and job readiness, equipping them for a successful transition to the workforce. Overall, the Investigating Careers course offers a comprehensive and detailed exploration of numerous career options, ensuring that students are well-prepared to make informed decisions about their future careers and are equipped with the skills necessary for success in the professional world. Scope and Sequence

Unit 1: Agriculture and Natural ResourcesIn this unit, students will embark on a comprehensive exploration of Agriculture and Natural Resources. This unit will provide them with an in-depth understanding of managerial roles within the agriculture industry and the broader field of natural resources. Students will delve into resource science, encompassing the study of plants, animals, and the environment. They will also explore the various resource technologies associated with these elements. The unit will cover fundamental farming practices, nursery and grounds-keeping, pest control, forestry, logging, hunting, fishing, and mining. To assess their knowledge, the unit concludes with a comprehensive review and an exam.

Unit 2: Architecture and ConstructionThis unit centers on the world of Architecture and Construction. In this section, students will gain insight into managerial positions within this industry and explore aspects such as architectural design, construction engineering, and the various crafts involved in construction. They will also learn about systems and equipment installation, maintenance, and repair, as well as construction support services. At the end of the unit, students will consolidate their learning through a review and an exam.

Unit 3: Arts and CommunicationThis unit immerses students in the diverse careers of Arts and Communication. Within this unit, students will explore managerial roles in this field and dive into various creative domains such as writing, editing, news broadcasting, public relations, studio art, design, drama, music, dance, media technology, and communications technology. The unit will conclude with a review and an exam to evaluate their comprehension of the content.

Unit 4: Business and AdministrationThis unit is dedicated to Business and Administration careers. Students will learn about managerial roles in general business and the finer details of the business world. They will delve into roles related to human resources support, secretarial support, accounting, auditing, analytical support, mathematical clerical support, and records and materials processing. The unit will culminate with a review and an exam to gauge their understanding of business and administrative functions.

Unit 5: Education and TrainingThis unit guides students through careers in Education and Training. They will discover managerial work in the education sector and explore roles in teaching at various levels, library services, archival and museum services, counseling, and health and fitness education. To assess their knowledge, the unit concludes with a comprehensive review and an exam.

Unit 6: Finance and InsuranceThis unit focuses on the dynamic careers in Finance and Insurance. Students will learn about managerial positions in this industry and explore aspects such as finance/insurance investigation and analysis, records processing, customer service, and sales and support. The unit concludes with a review and an exam to ensure students have grasped the complexities of finance and insurance careers.

Unit 7: Government and Public AdministrationIn this unit, students will explore careers in Government and Public Administration. They will discover managerial roles in public planning and regulations enforcement, as well as public administration clerical support. The unit will end with a review and an exam to assess their understanding of government and public administration functions.

Unit 8: Health ScienceThis unit delves into the vital careers within Health Science. Students will learn about managerial work in medical and health services and explore various healthcare specialties, including medicine, surgery, dentistry, health specialties, and medical technology. They will also gain insight into patient care and assistance. The unit will conclude with a review and an exam to ensure students are well-prepared for careers in health science.

Unit 9: Hospitality, Tourism, and RecreationThis unit introduces students to the exciting careers in Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation. They will discover managerial roles in hospitality and tourism and explore recreational services, food and beverage preparation and service, sports, and barber and beauty services. The unit concludes with a review and an exam to evaluate their comprehension of this dynamic field.

Unit 10: Human ServiceThis unit focuses on Human Service careers, encompassing counseling and social work, religious work, child/personal care and services, and client interviewing. The unit concludes with a review and an exam, ensuring students are well-prepared for careers in the human services sector.

Unit 11: Information TechnologyIn this unit, students will explore careers in Information Technology. They will discover managerial work in this field and delve into information technology specialties and digital equipment repair. The unit concludes with a review and an exam to assess students' understanding of IT careers.

Unit 12: Law and Public SafetyThis unit delves into Law and Public Safety careers. Students will learn about managerial work in this field and explore legal practice and justice administration, legal support, law enforcement, public safety, emergency responding, and military careers. The unit concludes with a review and an exam to ensure students are well-prepared for careers in law and public safety.

Unit 13: ManufacturingThis unit introduces students to careers in Manufacturing. They will discover managerial work in manufacturing and explore various roles, including machine setup and operation, production work, welding, brazing, soldering, machinery repair, and vehicle and facility mechanical work. The unit concludes with a review and an exam to evaluate their understanding of manufacturing careers.

Unit 14: Retail and Wholesale Sales and ServiceThis unit focuses on Retail and Wholesale Sales and Service careers. Students will learn about managerial roles in this field and explore technical and general sales, personal soliciting, purchasing, and customer service. The unit concludes with a review and an exam to assess their comprehension of the retail and wholesale industry.

Unit 15: Scientific Research, Engineering, and MathematicsThis unit offers students insights into careers related to Scientific Research, Engineering, and Mathematics. They will explore managerial roles in this field and learn about physical, life, and social sciences, physical science laboratory technology, mathematics, data analysis, research and design engineering, and engineering technology. The unit concludes with a review and an exam to ensure students are well-prepared for careers in these fields.

Unit 16: Transportation, Distribution, and LogisticsUnit 16 focuses on careers in Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics. Students will discover managerial work in transportation and explore air vehicle operation, truck driving, rail vehicle operation, water vehicle operation, and other services requiring driving. The unit concludes with a review, an exam, and a talk by Mr. E Pep to provide practical insights into the industry.

Unit 17: High School PathwaysThis unit introduces students to High School Pathways, offering insights into various pathways to future employment, including STEM, business and industry connections, arts and humanities, and public service opportunities. The unit concludes with a review and an exam to help students make informed choices about their future career paths.

Unit 18: Future Career Pathways, Finances, Preparation for College and LifeThis unit focuses on preparing students for future career pathways, financial planning, and college readiness. They will envision success, explore career pathways, and understand postsecondary readiness. The unit also covers financial aspects, including credit, loans, money management, and preparing for college and job interviews. The unit concludes with a review and an exam to equip students with the skills needed for their future careers and financial stability.

Unit 19: Career Readiness and Career AwarenessIn this unit, students will explore career readiness and career awareness. They will undergo career testing, create a career portfolio, learn about job applications, the interview process, and societal impacts on careers. The unit concludes with a review and an exam to ensure students are well-prepared for the job market and understand the broader context of their chosen careers.

Unit 20: Career Path Decisions and Career FieldsIn this unit, students will explore various part-time and full-time job opportunities during high school, managing employment earned funds, understanding a comprehensive career path that fits their needs, and gain insights into different career fields, including nursing homes, servers, baristas, lifeguards, and more. The unit concludes with a final review and a final exam, empowering students to make informed career choices and pursue their desired career paths with confidence.
